Manuel Mathieu
This catalogue features full-color illustrations of works and exhibitions by the artist, with essays by Alex Gartenfeld and Benjamin Klein.
Manuel Mathieu (b. 1986, Haiti) employs a haunting mix of figuration and abstraction in his paintings, which take as their subject the ephemeral connection between what is tangible about life and what is fleeting. Embedded in the work are details of the artist’s life during the twenty-one years he spent in his home country, and his experiences living and working in London and Montreal since. Manuel’s compositions are guided by the aesthetic traditions of Haiti and are permeated with emotionally charged imagery that reflects on the simultaneous beauty and struggle to which the artist has been witness.
