This catalogue features full-color illustrations of works, exhibitions, and performances by the artist, with an essay by Phillip Barcio.

Jeffrey Gibson (b. 1972, USA) blends Modernist abstract symbology with folk traditions inspired by his Choctaw-Cherokee heritage to address subjects surrounding personal and cultural identities.

His artwork references various aesthetic and material histories rooted in Indigenous cultures of the Americas, and in modern and contemporary subcultures. Working in media ranging from painting to performance, Gibson’s use of both traditional Indigenous and contemporary materials translates into a unique visual language, such as a beaded punching bag and painted animal hide. Gibson explores the aesthetics of cultures in relation to his personal identity, cultural experiences, and meditations on history.

Gibson was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2019.
