Since the early 1980s, Jessica Stockholder has been developing her work using various materials and objects, which she chooses according to very simple criteria: they are directly usable, immediately available, and as inexpensive as possible.

Guided by the qualities of materials, shapes, and colors of the objects, the artist tries to give logic to the chaos and disorder inside the composition. Objects lose their functional identities in a movement that goes from the concrete to the abstract. Thus, as she herself expresses it, her work is a "struggle between different modes of vision, [...] contributing to the appearance of a kind of blurring, a blurring of borders."

Published in 2012 on the occasion of Stockholder’s exhibition Wide Eyes Smeared Here Dear at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Saint-Étienne Métropole, this catalogue presents the ambiguity between the fictitious space of painting and the real space of assembled objects, one of the fundamental aspects of Jessica Stockholder's work.

Edited by Lorand Hegyi. Contributions by Steven Henry Madoff, Pascal Pique, and Jessica Stockholder.
