Claire Sherman (b. 1981, USA) is an oil painter whose work focuses on natural landscapes for subject matter. Far from straightforward recreations of images of the natural world, Sherman’s paintings emerge out of her interest in how our cognition distinguishes what is wholly abstract from what has been abstracted by our perception. Sherman sees nature as an ideal arena in which to explore the attributes of what is seen versus what is unseen. Her work is distinguished by its painterly surfaces, varied textures, and muted color palette.
