People In Pain is an account of the monumental wall sculpture People In Pain. The sculpture, originally created in 1988 by artist Gretchen Bender uses a set of 90 movie titles, emblazoned on crumpled backlit vinyl panels to express the passage of time and the flow of cultural production. Over the course of time, the sculpture fell into disrepair and was eventually discarded following the artist's death in 2004.

The book documents the original context for this important work, with essays by Philip Vanderhyden, Michelle Grabner, and Richard Milazzo, as well as interviews with Bender's brother Jonathan Bender and collaborator Stuart Argabright. The book also features a transcript of a panel discussion at The Kitchen following the restaging of her video works and performances in 2013.

Vanderhyden created this book to accompany his reconstruction of People In Pain for the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Edition of 300.
